Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow

Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow

by Piet Mondrian, 1930

Piet Mondrian’s Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow (1930) is a quintessential example of Neoplasticism, an art movement defined by its pursuit of spiritual harmony through absolute abstraction. The painting features a grid of bold, black horizontal and vertical lines that divide the canvas into asymmetrical rectangles of various sizes. Mondrian populates only a few of these sections with the primary colors, dominated by a large red square in the upper right, balanced by smaller blocks of blue and yellow in the opposite corners. By stripping the work of any representational subject matter, Mondrian sought to express a "universal beauty" through the fundamental tension between balance and contrast.
